Absolute Banking - UI/UX CASE STUDY

THE CHALLENGE

For this brief, we were given the task to design a banking app that will serve as an added feature to the normal banking app the user may have. To do this, we had to identify one problem that South Africans were facing today regarding money, and then find a solution on how our banking app will solve the problem. This brief is a group project working in pairs.
BLACK TAX

Our chosen problem to work with is the Black Tax. Black Tax is a cultural norm for black South Africans where few or one member of the family is sent to tertiary education so that they may receive a higher paying job and then pay the money back to their struggling families. It is an unspoken cultural norm, that black children are not raised or taught to eventually pay black tax, but are rather expected to. This creates bigger problems as financial literacy, and an entry-level salary, throw the user into a cycle of poverty, leaving them barely to be able to support themselves and their family members. The average user pays black tax for one household which can shelter 4 – 6 people.
UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM

To understand the problem more, we conducted a lot of user research and were able to come up with the following conclusions surrounding black tax: the users struggled with managing their money due to the stress and pressures of black tax and the users, as well as their families, suffered from a lack of financial literacy. These issues leave them in the loop of frustration and poverty.
POV STATEMENT:  African Black tax breadwinners ages 20-35 years with tertiary education need a way to sustainable solution that's allows them to comfortably contribute to the cultural black tax under the financial and social pressures because the user as well as their families suffer from lack of financial literacy which causes a cycle of poverty.
USER PERSONA

To further understand our users and their need we created various user personas through scenario mapping, from easy-to-solve users to complicated users. In the below diagram our most complicated user that we crafted to understand the scope of what young people go through when participating in black tax
USER FLOW

The flowing is a user flow we created for her while looking at her monthly income and expenses as well as her spending habits. From this, we are able to see what kind of a person this user is while simultaneously understanding the what the user needs from our solution
SOLUTION

For our final solution, we came up with a banking app that serves as a life coach in your pocket, that provides the user with two main functions; financial planning through the user's goals and ambitions, as well as keeping track and assisting the user to contribute to Black Tax healthily.

FINAL CONEPT

The final concept of this project is centred around family and painting a better light on the black tax contribution. To do this we have family pictures all over the app to bring a sense of familiarity to the app; the black tax is not a burden but an indication of the natural connection between black African people.

HOME PAGES

The home pages showcase a home overall home page which then can section down into the black tax overview when viewing the black tax tab as well as the goals overview when going into the goals tab. These pages are a general breakdown of what happening in the user's bank account
EMERGANCY PAYMENTS

Emergency payments are payments made outside of the normal black tax contribution. This form of payment occurs when unforeseen circumstances occur and the dependant needs an instant payment from the user. They then provide for that need by classifying it as an emergency payment. The user can select which account it comes from then they can make a plan when to earn back the money if needed.
The emergency payment is activated first through a notification sent to the user by the dependant, then the user will fill out the necessary information to complete the emergency payment

COLOUR

The colours were chosen to play on the primary colours, blue red and yellow, whereas except for red as the main colour we have the colour teal. The colour chosen is in large contrast with each other through greyscale, and so would complement each other and the overall look and feel of the app. These colours were chosen to bring a sort of African- feel to the app; yellow and blue are the primary colour for most African attire and teal serves as a good complement that also represents the nature that south Africa inhabits.

The colour red and orange are also primary colours that are found in most African traditional attires. I thus opted for these colours to be used as warning colours as red and orange are universally known as colours that give different degrees of warning signals; red is a higher warning than orange.
